A profile of what people involved are like will help you to understand more clearly some of the issues affecting the performance, and will later help you to develop training that more closely meets their needs.
In practice, of course, it can be difficult to draw up a picture of the typical user. Even within the same job grade there may be big variations, and the task is even harder if you try to design for a large number of different groups of people.
How do you develop a profile?
Here are some questions you can ask people in the target group that will help you develop a profile.
General background
- How old?
- Male or female?
- What level of education?
Job experience
- How long in the job?
- Full-time or part time?
- What training have they previously done?
- What training has worked well?
- What training has worked less well?
- How does their work limit the time available for training?
- Do managers provide support for training?
Motivation
- What gives them a sense of satisfaction?
- Whose respect do they value?
- What factors influence their standing with their peer group?
- What do they like to do in their spare time?
