In simple terms there are four stages to the learning process. As shown here, there are various learning strategies appropriate to each stage.
Note that:
- These strategies can be used in both face to face and distance learning approaches.
- Strategies can be integrated, so that, for example, a simulation may contain tutorial elements, where a trainer or the e-learning course provides some explanation.
Look at the strategy you are interested in for more information.
Simulation, game or tutorial?
A decision on which strategy to use should be informed by the performance objective. Performances requiring higher level actions such as judge, justify or predict may be best served by a simulation or game.
It may be advantageous to combine a simulation or game and a tutorial. For example:
- A tutorial about making lending decisions in a bank could incorporate a small simulation where the learner has to make a decision given a certain amount of data.
- A simulation about carrying out performance appraisals could include a short tutorial section explaining some aspect of the process.
